Access and Public Lands

Access matters, and we’re seeing another great example of late from North Carolina as reported Christmas Day in the Raleigh News and Observer here. Privatization interests are pressing access boundaries on a number of fronts, and in places you’d often not think of when it comes to access confrontations. Stay vigilant my friends. Image mine […]

Is New Mexico Moving to Improve Waterway Access? My lovely wife and I have a longstanding affinity for New Mexico; we’ve recreated there a fair amount over the past 30 years, hell, we even spent part of our honeymoon there a few years back. New Mexico has an astoundingly interesting food scene and their tri-cultural […]

From the USAC newsletter last week… For those of you considering year end donations to worthy organizations, please ponder the incredibly important work the USAC is doing battling what very well might be a (or the) pivotal access case in process for the entire country. The USAC team continues to sponsor this incredibly important work […]

In the run-up to remembering the anniversary of TR’s birthday this past Sunday the 27th, groups far and wide invoked memory of TR’s powerful conservation legacy. Brett French has a nice piece up in the Missoulian about the ongoing tussles over access to Montana’s Crazy Mountains, a stone’s throw from Jake and Kaitlyn’s home in Livingston, and a welcome edifice on the eastern skyline viewed from their backyard. Access is a tricky issue, and some of the groups involved in the […]

Attaboy: Utah Stream Access Summit County Watershed Meeting The good folks at USAC at still working hard on access issues in Utah; please note the Summit County meeting this week for those in the area. A thought-provoking (and somewhat predictable) read from the NYT about Western lands being sold to the highest bidders (some describe them as the modern version of post-Civil War carpet-baggers). Yet another reminder why public lands are so vital today. Image via the NYT.

What say ye regarding the Feds announcement last week they plan to expand hunting and fishing opportunities on 1.4 million acres of land ensconced in current national wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries? Here’s the press release from Interior (5 June) and a list of the proposed sites that will offer expanded access if approved. The […]

Good read in the Casper Star Tribune about public lands and the need to step up to protect them. We were in Caspar just a few days ago, what an amazing part of a truly gorgeous state…
