Yellowstone

Good news – bad news today on the Yellowstone. The good news – Salmonflies are on the river and nearing Yankee Jim.  There are some big Caddis (the big chocolate brown Caddis) and some Goldens around as well.  Despite the high flows there have been some boats on the water and they’ve been boating some […]

Flows are coming down – slowly – and visibility is up to the 6 to 8 inch range, though the impressive storms that rolled out of the Gallatins and the Park yesterday will probably change that (for the worse) today.  You can see from the CoolWorks webcam shot this morning north of Gardiner that there’s […]

A picture from the Cool Works webcam this morning and the flow chart says more than enough… I was over for dinner yesterday and the river has colored up with the recent rains again – look for her to fish somewhere between the 5th and the 10th at this rate……

Drove over to Livingston last night with the one who must be obeyed and Jake for dinner – where? Mark’s In and Out, of course – and took a gander at the river just for the hell of it. The pic is the view south from the Carter’s bridge. The Good News:  Flows are actually […]

The Good News: Cooler weather over the past few days has dropped flow volumes by almost 25% – pretty damned impressive. The Bad News: The river is still high and dirty and still several weeks away from genuine fishability. Stoneflies this year? Maybe.

Not a lot to say about the Yellowstone at this point in time – yesterday afternoon flows peaked up near 20,000 cfs at Carter’s.  Warm temps due this week will likely push a lot of snow down, and she just might crest higher after a few days in the high 70s as forecast.  If the […]

Three days ago it would have been safe money to bet that the Yellowstone had blown out for the duration of runoff; there was a fair amount of discussion around the neighborhood that it was a shame as the caddis had been fairly active.  Runoff is one of those inevitabilities on western rivers; at least […]

From the heart of every fly fisherman does indeed spring eternal hope – hope that water will clear, hatches will pop, and fish will rise to the fly.  Today and tomorrow might be some of those ‘hoped for’ late spring days on the Yellowstone.  Are there genuine reasons to have hope today – yep, there […]

The first day of the 2009 Yellowstone fly fishing season is now only 19 days away. What the hell does that have to do with Bigfoot? Read on. Visions of hungry rainbows, cutts and browns rising with abandon in Yellowstone’s fabled waters to blanket blue winged olive hatches are dancing in more than one fly […]

With yesterday’s first (for the most part) full day of sun in a thousand years or so, fly fisher folk were out in good numbers enjoying the much improved (though not perfect) flows and clarity on the Yellowstone.  For your viewing pleasure this morning’s much improved flow graph and temperature chart – note the near […]

The Good News:  More than one fly fisher folk have reported actual sightings of caddis on the Yellowstone.  Mike (good friend, great fisherman, reasonably reliable reporter of river conditions) was over on Wednesday and saw and fished caddis; he promised pictures and has not delivered as of this morning.  Pictures or not – hot damn.    […]

The one who must be obeyed desired a burger, tots, and a cherry coke at Mark’s for a late lunch today.  She earned it this week. A drive to Livingston must always include a peek at the Yellowstone; despite the warmer weather and the melt of a fair volume of the low-level snow, she looked […]

Ever have a great friend leave town for a few months?  I’m not talking about someone who’s just an acquaintance, but a really good friend that always brings a smile and a laugh every time you see them.  A friend that you see two or three times a week and never grow tired of.  A friend […]

The river was fishing pretty danged well before our return to winter and cooler temps this week.   Baetis were out and streamers working pretty well.  Friends up in Gardiner said they were shoveling 8-10 inches of wet, heavy snow on Wednesday (the Park’s guys confirmed as well); when the highs start pushing into the 60’s […]

At 8 AM this morning another ritual of spring happened in Yellowstone – some of the interior roads that have been closed for winter opened up for driving traffic.  Jake and I are both stuck in the real world working today, though will be documenting in video a drive from Bozeman to West Yellowstone and […]
