The Yellowstone in the Park is very close to fishing well. The area below the Lake remains closed until the 15th of this month. Flows are starting to creep back down to manageable levels. Fishing in the Grand and Black Canyons seems to be the best bet. Last report I heard from a buddy […]
Yellowstone (YNP)
First of all, Happy Independence Day! Take some time to celebrate our country and all that it means to be free. Secondly, I hope you aren’t planning on celebrating by fishing the Yellowstone in the park. The river right below the lake does not open until the 15th. The canyons are slowly getting into fishable […]
The Yellowstone in the Park is still up and dirty. As you can see from the flow chart, the outflow from the lake is way up. Mark and I were down in the Park yesterday afternoon on the Firehole and caught a glimpse of the Yellowstone on the way there. It is going to be […]
Flows have tipped back up on the Yellowstone over the past few days, and with storms that rolled through here (Bozeman) and more importantly over the Yellowstone’s upper reaches yesterday evening and last night, flows will likely push a bit more. The shot above is from the Cool Works webcam below Gardiner this morning – […]
It is going to be a while yet. Sigh.
See you in the Canyons in three to four weeks, and below the Lake on the 15th of July.
The flow gage on the Yellowstone River as it leaves Yellowstone Lake has been moving up all week – there’s now an impressive volume of water moving through. The lower Grand and Black Canyons were marginal last weekend and are long gone now. See you below the outlet on the 15th of July.
Jake and I did manage to get to Yellowstone on Saturday for the opening day of the Park’s fly fishing season, despite a bit of trouble with his Jeep and an early morning work task that kept me pinned to the computer for a short time. The day was largely filled with pleasant surprises, like […]
The day we have all been waiting for is here. Opening day in this part of the world is considered an almost religious holiday, whether it is the trout season opener, Yellowstone opener, elk opener and so on. On this special day, we are showcasing two days worth of stuff for the price of one in The Twelve […]
If Spock were standing with you today analyzing the opening day potential of the Yellowstone River in the Park, he’d damned well probably say ‘interesting’. As you’d expect for this time of year and given the past week’s weather, flows have been gradually increasing all week out of the still closed to fishing (15 June) […]
Mark and I ran down to West Yellowstone this morning to meet with John Juracek regarding a project, and we decided to run into the park and get a look at some of the rivers. Here is a shot of the Madison about two miles from the West Gate. The section just above Seven Mile […]
In honor of some of the idiots blocking the road to get pictures of bison in Yellowstone this morning, here is The Twelve Days of Yellowstone-Day 10: On the tenth day of Yellowstone my fishing buddy gave to me – Ten Tourists Tripping Nine Dancing Drakes Eight Brookies Biting Seven Swans a-sunning Six Geese a-Swimming Five […]
One of the quickest escalations of flows seen in the neighborhood in a while. The flow graph and gage height at Carter’s says it all. It’s hard to see but the red line on the gage height graph is the flood stage. Of note, we are due cooler temps for couple of days (60s) with […]
Thinking of clear waters and big bugs – here’s the Twelve Days of Yellowstone – Day 9: On the ninth day of Yellowstone my fishing buddy gave to me – Nine Dancing Drakes Eight Brookies Biting Seven Swans a-sunning Six Geese a-Swimming Five Golden Rings Four Rising Cutthroat Three bald eagles Two golden stones And […]
We return to a fishing theme today with the continuation of the Twelve Days of Yellowstone – Day 8: On the eighth day of Yellowstone my fishing buddy gave to me – Eight Brookies Biting Seven Swans a-sunning Six Geese a-Swimming Five Golden Rings Four Rising Cutthroat Three bald eagles Two golden stones And a Winston […]
