Once we roll to late October or early November, it’s always comforting to visualize the early season snows in the hills laying down the foundations for the annual snowpack build, stockpiling the water we’ll be fishing next season.
An early season storm has pummeled Montana and other parts of the Northern Rockies this weekend, including Jake, Brantley, and Kaitlyn in Livingston above, and Jess in Missoula.
Looks like the La Nina bounty of snow and cold for the northern part of the country is arriving a little earlier than expected this year – good for snowpack, but these kind of early storms sure make the upcoming winter season look long and chilly.
Today over on the Older Bolder Life I’ve posted this nifty recipe for Ancho and Chipotle Glazed Beef Short Ribs, and shared a bit of the backstory about how Chef Libby and I experimented a bit to make a pretty good recipe a great one.
My lovely wife insisted on a street taco approach for these glazed short ribs last weekend, though the poppers the next night (with the short ribs cut into roughly 1/3-inch dice) were ever better.
And dammit, that salsa/sauce is really good.
Cheers.
Details here; note there’s an Instagram live event pre-premier at 3 PT, and the film drops live at 4 PT.
Enjoy.

From the Vimeo post –
Invasive Asian carp are a national problem requiring a national solution. Against the Current explores the impact Asian carp are having on Southern and Midwestern waters and the threat they pose to the Great Lakes and their connected waters by sharing business, tourism, tribal, fishing, outdoor recreation, scientific, and conservation perspectives from northern Michigan to Tennessee. Learn how Asian carp are harming our waters, how they threaten our values, what has been done, and what still needs to be done to stop Asian carp. Against the Current is presented by the National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center with support from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust, Rep Your Water, and Favorite Fishing. Produced by Jordan Browne.
Jess is just back from Belize and was in the first group allowed in the country (and on to El Pescador) since the lockdowns started back in the spring; she’s posted an interesting piece (What Travel to Belize Looks Like Right Now) on her photography and travel blog.
Another nifty podcast from the good folks at BOTE covering a float down the Apalachicola River to shed light on its oyster fishery and the need for some serious protection and improvements; listen here.
