River – Clark Fork

I’ve been enjoying a family reunion of sorts this weekend here in Missoula, and this will be our fifth straight day on the fine waters of southwest Montana.  There’s been more sun and heat than we’d of liked to have, but the fishing has overall been good. Since joining this project back in April, I’ve […]

The Clark Fork is trying to turn the corner to fish a bit more it does in the fall, though I’m not sure the weather is going to cooperate much this week. Yesterday’s clouds were welcome, and did produce a more robust (nifty word, eh?) mayfly hatch from what I hear along most of the […]

I know I probably sound like a broken record, but the evening Caddis on the Clark Fork have been killer of late.  From about 7 until 9 in the evening it’s been pretty damned crazy; my daughter, her husband and I made it out three evenings this past week and had some of the best […]

I guess I’ve shared before that my daughter lives in Missoula; she and her husband have an affinity for the Clark Fork that goes beyond the fact that it basically runs right through town and their backyard.  They’re on the river 2 afternoons and evenings during the summer and fall or more. Last night they […]

The Clark is settling, at least above Missoula and the Blackfoot confluence, after last week’s bountiful rains pushed flows up and dumped some color back into the river. From what I heard late yesterday, from Missoula down the river is still off quite a bit, though above the Blackfoot it’s better and clarity is just […]

After last week’s respite from the dog days, it’s back to summer this week. That means it’s time once again to be on the river early for PMDs, Tricos (kinda spotty), and probably some early Spruce Moth action.  On the hot days due earlier in the week, by noon or so, it will be hopper […]

Those of you following the fishing over here know that it’s been hot as hell this past week; the upper Clark Fork has been fishing decently during the warm spell while the river below Missoula has been pretty spotty. Clouds, a chance of rain, lower temperatures, and higher humidity (bugs stay on the water longer) […]

This past weekend brought with it some of the warmest weather of the year – it hit 97 in Missoula on Saturday and was 101 at my place in the Bitterroot valley.  Felt like it too. Summer’s long, hot days are creating some skinny fishing on area waters during the heat of the day, say […]

The river has been fishing better and better over the past week or so; the evening Caddis have been amazing, and clarity above Bonner (above the Blackfoot) has been quite good.  The rains / showers wandering around the area have bumped flows a bit this morning but it shouldn’t be a real issue. The challenge […]

The warm weather over the past week has really put a damper on the mid-day stuff, but the evening Caddis has been very good if not great.  Flows are definitely on the drop, clarity has come around (really, it’s not a problem), and temps have been holding well.  Clouds due today at least should help […]

Conditions are improving on the Clark Fork, though the river is still a bit away from offering what anyone would say are prime conditions. Mark and Jake are giving me a hard time about posting flow charts in all of my reports, but this time of year flow rates are critical and offer a great […]

Unlike the Bitterroot, the Clark Fork hasn’t experienced a big bump in flows at all, only up to a tad over 4000 cfs this morning (4010 cfs at Turah Bridge this morning).  I haven’t been on the river in a bit myself, though I hear she’s fishing well with big hairy attractor nymphs, Golden Stones, […]

The Clark Fork is on the way up like most of the rivers in the area; she was just beginning to come into shape above Rock Creek before ‘the rains came’.  Don’t get me wrong, most of us who live in this corner of the state love the spring / early summer rains as this […]

The cooler weather has helped the Clark Fork, but she’s just not there yet.  There’s a tremendous amount of water still rolling down this river as you can see.  My guess is that she’ll be fishable in 7 to 10 days pending the weather and rainfall.  There’s a lot of season yet to come…..

Nope.  No way.  No chance.  Nada.  The Clark Fork is blown top to bottom.  There are trees, small buildings, and the occasional cow being washed through Missoula these days.  Flows are running and will likely go even higher this week.  See you on the CF in three or four weeks; she’ll be the last of […]
