Sure, you could get a stick or use your finger and dig out all the mud and crap from the soles of your wading shoes, but where’s the fun in that?
Pic of the Day
This one goes out to everyone who wishes they were out doing this instead of whatever the hell else you’re doing today.
Been some cool enough mornings of late to remind river-minded folks that winter is knocking on the door. River ice in the right light makes for a worthy subject after a few hours slinging nymphs at sluggish trout.
Shane Rickert getting it done on the Upper Madison. This was his first attempt with a spey rod, and it actually turned out pretty well. As long as the fly gets where you need it to be that’s what counts, right?
Ever try to wade the Gallatin River in wading boots with no felt on the left one, and the felt peeling off on the other? Yeah, wouldn’t recommend it. On a side note, damn that new reel looks good on that switch rod. Photo by Shane Rickert.
When your girlfriend’s mom sends you an apron and matching chef hat from Sea World, complete with penguins on them both, make sure your fishing buddy doesn’t have his cell phone on him before trying them both on. That’s especially a bad idea if your buddy writes for a popular fishing blog. Damn buddy, I’m […]
Yesterday, with rain pouring down and temps hovering in the mid 50s, I decided to take the afternoon and go fishing. Fishing in the rain is always a pleasure. The sound of the drops on the hood of my rain jacket, the fact that no one else ever seems to be out, and the chilly […]
Remember to keep an eye on all that loose line you strip off your reel. Because when the big one of the day hits, all that line will invariably wrap itself around your rod and create a frustrating, if somewhat comical, scene.
Ever have one of those mornings where you wake up and just don’t want to go to work? One of those mornings where you wish you could wander down to the docks, hop in your Boston Whaler and cruise around on the water all day? Yep. Me too. But alas, I have no Boston Whaler […]
Every now and then you get the urge to try something out of the ordinary. Like pitching mice in the middle of the summer to brown trout in a small stream. Sometimes those gambles pay off… Photo by Shane Rickert
Campfires are as much a part of summer as heat waves and short shorts. Sadly, for the last few years my campfire quota has been severely lacking. A couple of weeks ago I got a good start to this year though… Where is your favorite place for a campfire?
Shane and I hit the East for the first time in what seems like quite a while late last week. Flows have finally dropped down to a fishable level, and we both felt the itch. I got to the water first, and landed 5 smaller fish on dries in quick succession. Once Shane showed up […]
On an after work fishing excursion in the rain last week, something pretty cool happened. Any double is worth celebrating. But a double where the smallest fish is the size of your forearm is pretty sweet. Photo by Shane Rickert.
This may be my favorite photo of the year. Hat tip to the Trouthunter blog, which generally puts out high quality photos and text and is worth an RSS subscription, if you are into that sort of thing. Happy father’s day. indeed.
