The Bighorn continues to fish well. Flows were increased earlier this week to around 4,500 cfs. The water is running clear for the most part and the fishing is pretty good. Not much has changed as far as hatches and recommended flies are concerned. Nymphs such as sowbugs, san juan worms, pheasant tails, midge and […]

Is it possible to brownline in Bozeman? Perhaps not quite to the standards of Singlebarbed and the Fat Guys Fly Fishing, but it can be done. Take the Bozeman Pond for example. After work last night, my buddy Shane and I decided to head on down there and throw for some flies for a few […]
The Lamar is still blown out. Damn.
The Gardner is running high, dirty and cold. Visibility is in the three to four inch range at best. If you feel that you absolutely must fish this river, try dragging a big nymph near the bank. I would recommend waiting for a few more weeks before spending too much time over here.
The Cascade Corner remains blown out. All of the rivers and creeks are high and very dirty. It will be a while yet before the water clears to a fishable level. Sigh.
Don’t interpret the title of this post to mean that the Madison is fishing great. It isn’t. Fishing well in a few places, but not great. With the recent rain and warm weather, water clarity is dropping along the entire river. However, there are still some places where you can fish relatively clear water and […]
The Gallatin is still completely blown out. Flows are almost 4,000 cfs this morning at Gallatin Gateway and will be rising throughout the day. The river near Logan is expected to flood either later today or in the next few days. Even the upper river above Taylor Fork is pretty dirty. It will be a […]
The Bighorn continues to fish well. This fact is not going unnoticed by crowds of anglers who are descending upon the river. With very few rivers fishable in the state right now, the ones that are are crowded. Flows are up to just over 4,000 cfs right now, and I heard from a buddy of […]
Thank God for the tailwaters. With runoff here in full force, they are the only rivers fishing well. The Beaverhead is no exception, as least for part of the river. The section from below Clark Canyon Dam to High Bridge is still running clear and fishable. The river below there is muddying up more and more […]
The day we have all been waiting for is here. Opening day in this part of the world is considered an almost religious holiday, whether it is the trout season opener, Yellowstone opener, elk opener and so on. On this special day, we are showcasing two days worth of stuff for the price of one in The Twelve […]
If Spock were standing with you today analyzing the opening day potential of the Yellowstone River in the Park, he’d damned well probably say ‘interesting’. As you’d expect for this time of year and given the past week’s weather, flows have been gradually increasing all week out of the still closed to fishing (15 June) […]
The Lamar is in sorry shape right now. Flows are at about twice their normal levels. The river won’t be fishable for another month at least. I am sure this knowledge won’t stop at least the most adventuresome souls from going to see if conditions have improved over night, and I don’t blame them. Hell, […]
Mark and I ran down to West Yellowstone this morning to meet with John Juracek regarding a project, and we decided to run into the park and get a look at some of the rivers. Here is a shot of the Madison about two miles from the West Gate. The section just above Seven Mile […]
In honor of some of the idiots blocking the road to get pictures of bison in Yellowstone this morning, here is The Twelve Days of Yellowstone-Day 10: On the tenth day of Yellowstone my fishing buddy gave to me – Ten Tourists Tripping Nine Dancing Drakes Eight Brookies Biting Seven Swans a-sunning Six Geese a-Swimming Five […]
The Gardner, like all waters in Yellowstone, opens for fishing this Saturday. Unfortunately, the river is blown out and pretty much unfishable. It might be possible to find some rising fish in slack water here and there, but don’t expect much. The cooler nights lately have helped bring flows down a little bit, but this […]
