It is going to be a while yet.  Sigh.

As you can see from the flow chart, flows on the Lamar have dropped quite a bit in the past week.  The river is still pretty muddy according to a friend of mine who was down in the area a few days ago.  If the trend continues, the river could be fishable in a few […]

The Gardner is still running high, but water clarity is better this week.  Expect visibility in the foot to 18 inches range.  The water, especially up high, is pretty dang cold right now. The lower river is fishing the best.  Throw big, flashy nymphs tight to the banks and in the fishable pocket water.  Stonefly […]

The Cascade Corner remains blown out this week.  Won’t be that much longer before the water drops and clears.  Keep checking back.

The recent cool weather and rain has only improved the Madison.  Most of the tribs and feeder creeks are still pumping in a lot of mud, but you can find some clear water that is fishing well. The same spots that were fishing well on the Upper last week continue to do so.  Between Hebgen […]

The Gallatin, while not optimal, is certainly fishable.  Flows are down almost 1,700 cfs from their high earlier this week.  The water is still pretty dang muddy, but it is clearing up some.  I know we have been putting up a lot of flow charts lately, but it is a relief to show one with […]

The Beaverhead continues to fish well.  Flows have remained pretty constant, and water clarity isn’t too bad especially if you stay clear of the tribs and feeder creeks. PMDs are still coming up, but fishing a PMD nymph will yield some fish.  Midge nymphs and caddis pupae are also producing well.  A buddy of mine […]

Two things about the Bighorn seldom change this time of year: the fishing and the crowds.  The river is fishing good right now, and lots of folks know about it.  If you can stand the crowds, then you can do quite well. There have been lots of Baetis on top still, mainly in the afternoons.  […]

Sixty-five years ago today, Allied forces stormed the Nazi-held beaches of Normandy.  It was, and still is considered the largest amphibious assault in military history.  Over 156,000 troops from America, Britain, Canada and other countries participated in the invasion.  The Normandy invasion, dubbed Operation Overlord, opened a second front on the continent of Europe and […]

Enough Said.

The Gardner has made a comeback since last week.  Flows are dropping, and water clarity is improving.  The fishing isn’t at its peak by any means, but I have seen some pictures of nice fish pulled out of the river in the past few days. Big nymphs such as stoneflies, big princes, basically anything big […]

Most, if not all, of the waters in Cascade Corner remain blown out this week.  The Fall River is dropping, but is still pretty unfishable.  It won’t be too much longer though. Fortunately, there is a fair amount of water in the park right now that is fishing well.

The Upper Madison is a little more clear than last week.  Flows out of Hebgen have surprisingly dropped over the past few days.  A stretch of river just below the dam is closed, so heads up.  The river between the dam and Cabin Creek is your best bet between the lakes, but the rest of […]

The Gallatin is still blownout.  I wouldn’t count on fishing the river for at least several more weeks. However, if this cool snap does indeed stick around all week like the weathermen are projecting, the upper reaches of the river might clear just enough to warrant a fishing trip.  If the jeep wasn’t experiencing some mechanical […]

Not a whole lot has changed over on the Beaverhead this past week.  The best water is still from the dam down to High Bridge, with all the creeks and feeder streams blown out.  Nymphing is still the mainstay, with not a whole lot of action up on top. Standard nymphs such as princes, hare’s […]
