The Yellowstone in the Park is still up and dirty.  As you can see from the flow chart, the outflow from the lake is way up.  Mark and I were down in the Park yesterday afternoon on the Firehole and caught a glimpse of the Yellowstone on the way there.  It is going to be […]

The Lamar has come down a little bit over the past few days, but is still running high and dirty.  If you feel that you absolutely have to fish the river, try dragging some big, buggy nymphs near the banks.  Other than that, give it a little more time.

After a spike in flows earlier this week, the Gardner is back to normal flows.  Visibility is clearing up, over a foot in some places last I had heard.  To optimally fish this river right now, be ready to be on the move a lot. Just like last week, focus on the water near the […]

The Cascade Corner area is still blown out.  It won’t be too much longer though.

Not much has changed from last week on the Madison. The Upper is fishing well.  Salmonflies are very close, perhaps days away.  Water clarity is good right now, not gin clear but enough visibility for fishing.  Flows are up to 1,400 cfs.  It would be better for the Salmonfly hatch if there was a little […]

Yesterday, Mark and I had to run over to Missoula and got a chance to eyeball some of the waters in the area.  The Gallatin, at least the lower reaches of it, is blown out again.  The water is high and dirty. Last Saturday all of us drove down to the Park, driving along the […]

Flows are up over 11,000 cfs as of this morning on the Bighorn.  The fish are still feeding, but it is a nymphing game at this point. Fish worms, scuds, stonefly nymphs, caddis and mayfly pupae deep in the good looking runs.  You are most likely going to have to bring some split shot to […]

In the past two days, flows have come up quite a bit on the Beaverhead, just take a look at the flow chart.  This, as you might expect, has adversely affected fishing.  Visibility is pretty good right now, even with some of the local feeder creeks and tribs throwing some mud in.  The recent rains […]

The Gardner, or the lower Gardner anyway, is fishing pretty decently.  Flows have been creeping back up in the past few days with all the rain we have had, and visibility has suffered somewhat.  Still, you can expect to see over a foot of clear water. Fish big stonefly nymphs tight to the bank for […]

The Cascade Corner was close to being fishable earlier this week, but recent rains have pushed runoff to the point that it will be a while yet before you should even consider fishing this area.  We’ll keep an eye on the situation and let you know when it does clear up.

The Madison is kicking ass right now.  There are good hatches on the Lower, and the entire Upper is clearing up.  The rain is going to have hurt things somewhat, but not enough to really make a difference.  The feeder creeks and streams that were throwing a lot of mud into the Upper last week […]

The Gallatin has had an interesting week.  Several days ago, Mark and I drove up the canyon a ways and were surprised at how much better the water looked.  Not perfect by any means, but not chocolate milk either.  The rain over the past few days is starting to filter down to the river, which […]

Not a whole lot has changed on the Bighorn.  The fishing is good, the river is still pretty crowded, and the water remains clear.  Midges and BWOs are the main course over here, both above and below the surface.  Look for the dries in the afternoons and fish small nymphs until then.  Streamer fishing has […]

Flows over on the Beaverhead have come down during the past few days and water clarity is improving.  Grasshopper Creek and other feeder creeks and tribs are still throwing in some mud, but on the whole the water is in pretty good shape. PMDs are the ticket now, mainly nymphs but you might see some […]
