Challenging Days: A Tale of 2 Guides and an Iconic Livingston Eatery

These days of attempted homebound isolation are pounding the absolute hell out of fly fishing (and other outdoor) guides around the country, and I hope you’ll consider supporting efforts like the Adipose Raffle to ease a bit of the pain guides are feeling these day.

Kudos to teams like the good guys down at Fly Fish Rockport, who posted on the 31st how they’re keeping at it within bounds of rationale safety, even when ramps and marinas in Rockport (Aransas County) were shut down last week. Count me among those who feel that everyone without the most obvious co-morbidities and current impairments should be, within common-sense bounds, embracing any access to nature that’s pursuable in your neighborhood (for both physical and mental health). And fly fishing for Reds and Spotted Seatrout on the Texas Coast is a damn fine way to embrace the natural world these days.

Granted, it’s much easier to figure ways to get out and fish in warmer climes, but we’re all going to see more stories like the one below (Livingston EnterpriseFly Fishing Takes a Hit) detailing how Sweetwater has shut down for the foreseeable future. Deep pockets might be able to hang on, though it’s going to be very, very tough for many a shop and guide without spring/early season revenue rolling in.

On a brighter note, the Livingston Enterprise reported on Friday that come hell, high water, or COVID-19, Mark’s is going to open. Amen to that, and a hearty attaboy.
