Here’s the second part of our recent interview with Keagan Walls; see his introduction and the first half of the interview here.
What’s your favorite Texas-based species to fish for and why?
My favorite has to be the Guadalupe Bass. They don’t get too big, but they do put up a fight which makes it more thrilling to catch them.
I also enjoy chasing Large and Small Mouth Bass, Striper, Gar, Redfish, and Carp. I’m new to Carp game but they are fun and accessible in Texas.
What do you consider your home water(s) and what about it keeps you coming back?
I spend a lot of time in the Trinity River because it’s close to home and because of the diversity of species it has to offer. You can find Gar, Carp, Buffalo, Bass, and Panfish.
You’re putting together a trip to Montana’s Kootenai River with one of our favorite guide teams, Tim and Joanne Linehan; please tell us a little about the trip and how to reach you if somebody wants to jump in.
I’m excited to be able to put together a fishing trip to Far West Montana with the Linehans! Activities include floating the Kootenai River, walking/wading the Yaak River, and fishing out of kick boats in high alpine lakes.
The 6 night and 5-day trip takes place July 6 -12, 2019. The total cost is $3,582 and this covers lodging, meals, guided fishing, equipment, and a multi-use 20% off Orvis coupon so you can stock up on gear and clothing before or after the trip. The weather should allow us to wet wade and we should have some good hatches to throw dries to Redbands, Rainbows, and Westslope Cutthroat.
If anybody wanted to jump in with us, as of today there are a few spots left; just call the store at (972) 596-7529?, ask for me, and we’ll get you onboard.
What do you have on the calendar for other trips this season and what are your top bucket list destinations for the next several years?
The first big trip that I have scheduled will be in July when I head out to Montana to join up with the Linehans. Then I’ll make my way to Gunnison National Forrest in Colorado in August and September. Before those trips I’ll be chasing fish in North Texas and maybe the Hill Country if I can get away for a few days.
At the top of my list would be to catch a legendary Golden Dorado in Bolivia! That’s a trip that’ll put you to the test. Not only are you out of your comfort zone, but you’re so far from civilization in a country you’re not familiar with. Not to mention the fish monstrous and ruthless. Sign me up!
If you could encourage fly fishers to do just one thing in terms of stewardship this next year, what would that be?
Take care of the places you fish even your local ponds and creeks. Don’t leave any trash behind and pick some up while you’re there.
Thanks Keagan!
