The innovative folks with HubPlus recently offered to send us one of their portable charger units to play with and then give way here on Chi Wulff; as we have, I think you’ll find this one to be quite interesting.

My complaints about intrusive tech over the years duly noted, who doesn’t rely at some point during their week rely on tech to get something important done? Around our camp, we actually use our phones and tablets much more for work than recreation, and have a motley collection of fitness and geolocation tools that are power-hungry beasts as well.

Multi-day trips in the backcountry in particular pose a challenge to keep necessary electronics running; many of you use solar-powered gear (our professional photography daughter Jess does often), but it’s expensive, takes up precious packing space, and takes time and sunlight of course, which aren’t always easy to drum up uninterrupted on a busy trek or adventure.

Enter the MyCharge HubPlus, a small (4.1 inch x 2.5 inch x 0.9 inch, 7 ounces) portable charge device, basically a lithium ion battery, with a standard integrated two-prong plug for recharging, a standard USB port, and built-in lightning and micro-USB charging cables. The device is aluminum-cased, boasts a battery capacity of 6700 mAh, and a max 3.4A output.

We’ve charged a fairly new iPhone 8 and new iPhone Xr several times with ease, as well as my older Garmin with no difficultly, and I’ve been amazed at how quickly the main device battery recharges. There’s even an integrated 4 light display to monitor charge/discharge status. And from the images above, it’s very compact, easy to handle, and could easily tuck away for time on the road, river, mountain, or saltwater.

We’ll be dropping this unit in the mail to a lucky winner on Friday the 12th of April; if you’re in the market for a handy, compact, powerful, and well-engineered portable charger, fire an email here with MyCharge HubPlus in the subject line to enter the drawing.

Cheers.
