Spring 2019 Climate Projections and Trip Planning

This time of year several friends and I begin to think about timing of some our first river circuit trips around Montana and Wyoming chasing the spring mayfly hatches. It’s always a crap shoot in terms of weather, river flows, and the actual arrival and peak dates of hatches, but it’s fun to think about and play the what if game.

And though most of the time weather forecasts aren’t really worth a plugged nickel in terms of pinpoint accuracy, NOAH’s Climate Prediction Center has been pretty spot on with their general climate forecasts several months out. These forecasts are of course based on a plethora of data, including the very critical determinant of North American weather cycles – the ENSO (El Nino / La Nina) cycles.
