MonicEcoBlue5forCWMainIt’s my sincere pleasure to announce other giveaway today, courtesy of Monic Fly Lines out of Boulder, and it’s a sweet one – a MONIC IMPACT fly line in their Eco Blue, WF-5-Floating, pretty much the go to summer line weight for many of us (who doesn’t have a 5-wt rigged in the drift boat or take one out every week for that afternoon freestone wade or pond excursion?).

Fly fishers (at least from where we sit), as a whole, tend to be more environmentally conscious than the average Joe sitting on the couch munching cheetos, drinking beer, and busting NetFlix every night, and tend to advocate in particular for clean, accessible, unfettered waterways in which to fish.

In a glaring twist of irony, however, we’ve tended to use fly lines – at least since the (for most of us) long gone days of silk lines – that leach sh*tty harmful chemicals into the waters we love and their surrounding environs (PVCs). Monic has been working to change that for more than two decades.

Monic has been in the fly fishing line game for a while now (1994), and they have a pretty compelling story and premise. A bit about Monic’s history from their About page –

A lifetime ago, in the 80’s, avid angler Bob Goodale was fishing in Belize and having a heck of a time casting in the wind with a long leader. His frustration fueled his passion to design and develop a clear floating fly line that would enable him to use a short leader which would provide more stealth and not spook fish. After years of research & development, in 1994 he introduced the first All Weather Covert Clear line to the market and Monic was born.

The core features that make Monic lines different (again from their About page) –

The coatings on Monic Fly Lines do not contain the volatile chemicals that must be added to PVC in order to create a typical fly line. This shift in technology is important to maintain the durability of the line. Previously, these added chemicals would constantly leach out into the environment. For the same reason we stay away from PVC water bottles, food containers or baby toys, PVC emits poison. As those chemicals migrate out of the plastic, a void is created in the compound. Not only does this alter the compound from its initial, intended characteristics, but that void forces the compound to crack over time. This is where the circumferential cracks on a PVC fly line are born. Add dirt, oil, and other foreign debris to the cracks and performance degrades. Monic Fly Lines do not lose material over time, and therefore do not crack. This is important in the overall durability of the line and its performance longevity for the angler.

I have to admit I’ve not fished a Monic line in years past, though this past week loaded their GENESIS Cover Clear in a WF-8-Intermediate and will be chasing both bass and redfish with it in the next week or so. An update will follow.

DRAWING CLOSED 11 MAY 18.

If Monic’s IMPACT WF-5-F line (in Eco Blue) fits your gear and fishing niche, fire an email here with MONIC 5 in the subject line; we’ll draw a winner on Friday 11 May and drop it in the mail that day with some stickers as well.

Cheers.
