For those possessing a Southern bent, it’s Mint Julep Month over at Garden and Gun and they’re featuring several different and quite interesting takes on the classic mint julep during the month of April.

This Fourth Turn cocktail has been unashamedly pilfered from said list, and while we’re saving it for a special occasion upcoming, we know from past experience that strawberries and jalapeno combine for an unlikely but damned tasty marriage.

Don’t forget to make the strawberry syrup ahead of time…

3 parts Maker’s Mark or other fine bourbon
2 jalapeno slices, seeded if you must
5-6 mint leaves
1 part strawberry syrup
Sparkling wine (think Prosecco), as desired

Strawberry syrup
1 qt strawberries, hulled and chopped
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Splash of balsamic vinegar

Strawberry syrup: Cook the prepped strawberries, water, and sugar over medium heat until syrup coats the back of a spoon and has reduced a bit; mash the strawberries around.

Cool, then strain through a coffee filter; add a splash of balsamic vinegar and store in the fridge.

Cocktail: Gently muddle the mint leaves and jalapeno slices in a mixed glass, stir in the strawberry syrup. Now stir in the bourbon, add ice, and stir again. Strain into a (double old-fashioned) glass over a big ice cube and top with the sparkling wine.

Enjoy.
