Around our camp we observed a moment of silence on Thursday upon learning of the passing of Patrick McManus, a treasured outdoor writer, educator, outdoor columnist (Outdoor Life and Field and Stream among others), whose 14 collections of columns (in book form) he’s authored over the years still sit on one of our bookshelves today – titles including A Fine and Pleasant Misery, The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories, Never Sniff a Gift Fish, and more.
He was a master of melding the often stark reality of his post-depression upbringing in Northern Idaho (PM was born in August of 1933) with the often funny-as-hell experiences that a life lived outside brings, and was raised by his school-teacher mother on the banks of Sand Creek outside Sandpoint, Id. If you’ve not read McManus, you should, and like many greats of his generation, he’ll be missed.
Notable tributes here in the Idaho Statesman (their image above) and here in Northwest Sportsman Magazine.
