Jake is just back this week from spending 10 days in the Bahamas on a work shoot for his creative office; they were fishing, diving, snorkeling, generally having fun while much of the country was still shoveling snow and scraping ice off their car and truck windows on cold mornings.
Damn.
Another buddy (Jimmy) was down in Antigua the same week vacationing with his wife; he shared a story from the island there of a Mr. Potter who ran the bar at a famous spot in English Harbour detailing the classic recipe for Planter’s Punch – “4 strong, 3 weak, 2 sour, and 1 sweet”.
Not having the chance to personally review mixology with Mr. Potter, we’ll take Jimmy’s word for this version of Planter’s Punch that he sent over for us to share.
3 parts dark rum
1 part simple syrup
3/4 part fresh-squeezed lime juice
1 barspoon Grenadine
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 splash soda waterGarnish: Mint sprig
Combine the rum, simple syrup, lime juice, Grenadine, and bitters in your trusty shaker, which you’ve previously filled with ice. Shake, shake, shake.
Strain into an ice-filled (Collins) glass, top with a generous splash of soda water, and garnish with the mint.
Enjoy.
