Despite having had a fairly robust exposure to inshore saltwater game fish from regular childhood and young adulthood trips to the Texas Gulf Coast, as my personal interest in chasing saltwater species on the fly grew, my flat out ignorance of in- and nearshore saltwater game fish species became glaringly obvious as time went on.
Learning about the various species available to anglers would have a far sight easier years ago if Waterford Press’ laminated, folding, pocket guides were available as they are today. They’re brightly colored, sturdily constructed, pocket (or gear bag) size, laminated guides that read easily and are packed with information (both sides are printed). And even packing 36 different species into the guide, there’s damned impressive detail in the full-color, beautiful artwork. See it on Waterford’s site here; they have an unbelievable array of different pocket guides available, most under ten bucks.
Mike Onorato and Waterford Press were most kind to send over this guide – Saltwater Game Fish of North America – (along with two others) for us to play with, learn from, and give away. Never again confuse Spotted Seatrout with Weakfish or Spanish Mackerel with King Mackerel.
If you’re looking to up your saltwater game, where you’re targeting inshore/nearshore fish or the big boys offshore, you could use one of these in your saltwater box. We’ll be drawing for a brand-spanking new copy Saturday morning, 24 February – send an email here with Saltwater Game Fish in the subject line and your contact data to get in line for the drawing.
More guides to come over the next several weeks…
