From new friend of Chi Wulff Albert P. in Birmingham (Alabama) –

…saw the Irish Maid recipe from the guy over in Georgia a few weeks back. Southerners don’t only drink good bourbon, but it’s by and large the spirit of choice in these parts.

Summer isn’t the easiest time to convince non-bourbon aficionados to enjoy it, so it’s occasionally worth reaching for a bourbon-based cocktail, and this Bourbon Orange Ginger has become one of our favorites. I’m not really sure where we dug it up, but have been enjoying it forever it seems like.

The ginger syrup looks like a pain in the ass to make; it’s not, it comes together very quickly though you should note that one cup only makes 5 cocktails as I’ve shared the recipe. This is also a great one to make in a pitcher and share….

Ginger is vastly under-appreciated from where we sit; appreciate the recipe Al.

2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce triple sec
3 tbsp ginger syrup
3 ounces fresh-squeezed orange juice

Ginger syrup (makes 1 cup)
1/2 fresh ginger, peeled, sliced thin
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar (packed)
1.5 cups water
1/4 tsp real vanilla extract

Stir together the bourbon, triple sec, ginger syrup, and fresh orange juice, then pour over ice into a cocktail glass.

Note: when making the ginger syrup, combine the ingredients, bring to a boil, then simmer until reduced to a cup. Cool, strain, then throw into the fridge for up to a week. One cup makes enough syrup for 5 cocktails.

Enjoy.
