A Tough Weekend for Texas, But Devastating for Rockport

RockportInTheEye24Aug17It’s been a damned tough weekend for Texas with the Friday night arrival of Hurricane Harvey.

One of our absolutely favorite places and fly fishing destinations on the Texas coast, Rockport, appears to have taken the worst of the category 4 storm. From the discussion on Friday it appeared the heart of the storm would track just north of Corpus Christi; I happened to check radar late Friday night and caught the view to the right – Rockport literally was ground zero, sitting in the eerie calm of the hurricane’s eye, and just about to get hammered again. Dammit.

Reports of damage leaking out yesterday are stunning, and there will be more and more coming today. I had a fishing run planned for the week of 10 September, that’ll probably be a trip helping friends rebuild what needs to be rebuilt now.

Our buddies down in Houston are swimming now, as potentially historic rains fall out of the remnants of this bastard of a storm; some areas are still forecast to receive up to 40 inches of rain through mid next week.

If you have a friend down in this neighborhood, give ’em a shout and a word of encouragement, they could use it today. Texas has had her ass kicked by big storms before, and will rebuild, but it can be a dirty, frustrating, prolonged, and costly journey to get things back in order.

And dammit, adding insult to injury, one of the most iconic smokehouses in the state, Franklin BBQ in Austin, burned yesterday morning in Austin.

He’ll be back…
