On my first visit to New Zealand I spent some time fly fishing up at the central highland volcanic lakes on the North Island. After a cold spell the weather improved and the damsel fly nymphs slowly started to emerge from the mud. Large trout were visibly cruising about in the shallows, but I was having a hard time hooking them. And the ones I did hook broke off either after a jump or after a frantic run into the weed beds. I decided to get a closer look and mounted a GoPro Hero 5 down in a good-looking spot in the water and left it there. What I later saw in the video would help a lot when it came to cracking the code of the lake at that time. After about a week of very slow fishing I would enjoy some great days with lots of fish in the net. Later in the week the fish also started to take dries, but at the time of this video they were looking down for the damsel nymphs. Getting in there with an action camera for a close up view can give some truly valuable insight. Welcome to the magical underwater world of nymphs and trout!
