Here’s another nifty one to combat the mid-January “holy hell it’s still only the middle of winter” blues.
This Hot Caramel Buttered Rum cocktail was sent in by a good friend from Utah, to whom we’ve pledged to never reveal his name as he’d be in a, ah…compromising position if it were to be widely known that he and his lovely wife imbibe occasionally.
He’s one hell of a fishermen and was the one to first show me the almost “no effort” line through what used to be called the Mother-In-Law rapid on the Green below Flaming Gorge dam, supposedly named “because it’s a bitch”. Funny, in all of the times we floated our wooden drifter through there, we never seemed to have much trouble though we sure saw a bevy of rental rafts have issues.
If it’s still winter around your place, and that would seem to cover a great deal of the country today, stir a few of these together and toast your next float trip on the Green (don’t forget to try and hit the Cicada season…).
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
2 tbsp honey
2 tbsp softened unsalted butter
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp fresh ground or grated nutmeg
3 ounces good Anejo Rum
1 ounce Caramel vodka (look for Van Gogh’s)
1 cup hot waterGarnish: Full cinnamon stick
Combine the sugar, honey, butter and all the spices in a preheated mug; stir well to combine – it will look somewhat like a batter.
Add the hot water, rum, and vodka, stir well until the butter mixture has completely dissolved.
Garnish with a 3-inch cinnamon stick and go to it.
Enjoy.
