From friend of Chi Wulff Bill P. in Naples, Florida comes today’s recipe for a Hurricane Cocktail Punch. Bill writes –
In honor of Matthew set to soon pummel Florida’s east coast, here’s an easy cocktail for your list – a Hurricane Cocktail Punch. I know it’s not exactly what you’d get in NOLA, but it’s simple to stir together for a crowd and tastes far better than similar recipes featuring dumping a can of Hawaiian Punch (who really knows what the hell is in that?) into your pitcher.
We’ll have a houseful of friends weathering the storm at our place the next few days and we’ll probably stir up a batch or three of these along the way. When you choose to live in Florida or along the southern coast hurricanes are a simple fact of life; some storms you run like hell from and some you hunker down and ride out…
We had the opportunity to weather a Category 4 (Bret in South Texas in 1999) about 25 miles inland and were schooled back in the day as to the proper food, beverages and decorum for hurricane parties. It was an experience none of us will forget.
Stay strong Florida, Georgia and SC.
12 ounces fresh orange juice (or good prepared)
10 ounces fresh lime juice
10 ounces passion fruit syrup or grenadine
12 ounces good light rum
12 ounces good dark rum
Optional: 3 ounces simple syrup or 2 to 3 tbsp sugar
Large orange, slicedGarnish: orange slices, cherries, pineapple
Combine the orange, lime and passion fruit juices in a large pitcher, stir in the simple syrup or sugar if using (Bill usually doesn’t), then stir in the two rums.
Now add the orange slices and chill for an hour if keeping in a pitcher or pour into a punch bowl and add an ice block.
Grab some ice and those hurricane glasses and go to it.
Cheers.
