Yellowstone Water Temperatures: One of the Key Measures to Follow

TempYellLvn29AugAm

While not a hard and fast rule it appears, one of the key measures biologists and river managers are following is river temperatures; it’s been noted in more than one report that water temps need to consistently stay below 55 degrees during the daily peaks for the river to reopen.

The image above cut from the station report (Yellowstone near Livingston) early this morning shows daily temps are still peaking far (relatively in terms of water temp ranges) above the 55 threshold. As you’d expect, temps upstream at the Corwin Springs gage are a bit better.

The gage station on the Gardiner in the Park doesn’t record temps, but on the Lamar, another key Yellowstone input, temps are even better yet. (You can find the gage reports for all of Montana here; for those not familiar – hover over or click on a dot to pull the data up…)

There’s a pretty warm week ahead according to this morning’s forecast (Livingston’s forecast pictured), so dramatic cooling isn’t on hand this week at least.
