Another winner from the South Texas Coast and friend EH –
…here’s another one to consider for your Thirsty Thursday posts this summer – a simple yet damned tasty Watermelon Mojito.
Watermelons will be cranking through November as usual this year and they’re just too good to pass up. We keep a pitcher of watermelon agua fresca (ed. – here are two we’re partial to, try the ginger one…) in the fridge pretty much all the time, and have a bevy of watermelon-based cocktails we enjoy, but this one is probably my wife’s favorite.
Use a good rum and don’t skimp on the mint leaves, you need a stiff mint punch in this one. My version of She Who Must Be Obeyed has been reading some material lately that casts a skeptical eye towards agave nectar, so we’re substituting simple syrup most of the time and this one is a still a stellar cocktail with it.
I’m betting you’ll give this one a ‘hot damn’ when you shake one up this weekend…
Hot damn, indeed.
4 ounces seedless watermelon
3-4 mint leaves (large ones)
1/2 lime
1 tbsp Agave nectar
1 and 1/2 ounces rum of your choice (use the good stuff)
Pinch of Fleur de selGarnish: Skewered watermelon ball with cucumber slice (or) lemon twist
Muddle the watermelon, mint, lime half and agave nectar and salt pinch in your trusty shaker.
Add the rum and fill with ice; shake, shake, shake.
Strain into an ice-filled (rocks) glass.
Garnish as desired.
Enjoy.
