Been meaning to post a simple tribute in memory of Arthur “Art” Neumann, a Michigan businessman who died Monday the 21st at the worthy age of 99 in Saginaw.
After naval service in World War II, Neumann opened Rod Renew Shop, later called Wanigas Rod Co., which became known regionally as a producer of fine custom fly rods and gear. He witnessed firsthand the struggles the Au Sable endured in the 50s and 60s due to habitat degradation and overstocking, prompting Art to begin hands-on, locally-targeted efforts to invoke change.
His efforts blossomed into Trout Unlimited, and several histories have him traveling the country, making impassioned stump speeches, adding members and chapters across the country.
Some touching words have been shared about Mr. Neumann, a true cold water conservation pioneer, on the Michigan TU site, in local Michigan news, on the national TU site, and via Orvis.
There are a hoard of folks involved in the ‘business’ of conservation these days, though I fear there aren’t many Art Neumanns around…
RIP Mr. Neumann.
