Another most interesting adult beverage suggestion popped up in the inbox this past week from GK in Driggs (one of our favorite ‘back side of the Tetons’ locales) –

I was reading through your Thirsty Thursday posts the other day and noticed you guys have talked several times about how much you enjoy a Dark and Stormy. My wife and I almost always sip on those during our day off floats together (at least in warm weather), even if we have to stockpile good ginger beer here in the backcountry.

She brought home this Dark and Stormy Hot Chocolate cocktail recipe from a Christmas party and we both think it’s a pretty reasonable spin on the Dark and Stormy, though I think it’d be better with a ginger puree instead of the ground ginger. We’ll let you know….

Much appreciated, GK, and we’re more than willing to conduct the pureed ginger trials here as well and compare notes.

Cheers, and keep doing your snow dance.

2 ounces semisweet chocolate
3 cups whole milk
1 cup water
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 cup dark rum

Decadent option: Top with whipped cream sprinkled with chopped crystalized ginger

Melt the chocolate in a suitable saucepan over medium heat.

Once melted, add everything else except the rum, bump the heat up to medium high and whisk constantly until your concoction is smooth and just beginning to bubble round the edges.

Remove from the heat, stir in the rum and quickly pour into 4 preheated mugs to savor.

Enjoy.
