In honor of Montana State Parks’ 75th anniversary, Montana artist Monte Dolack was commissioned to paint “Smith River in June”; the short above captured part of the magic of its creation and prints are available here.

The proposed Black Butte Copper Mine threatening Sheep Creek (critical Smith headwater) was a faintly whispered threat back then…

Whether the damned mine approval process keeps rolling or not, you’ll want to take a few minutes and apply for your standard Smith River (the Montana Smith River) permit before 18 February rolls around. See all the poop you need to apply here.

They’re doing the Super Permit lottery again too – that deadline is 17 March.

Standard permit winners will be notified by mail and results will be posted online as of 3 March 2016.

Don’t forget bear proof food storage is Mandatory in 2016; do your part, read up on the regs and best practices and plan ahead with the right gear.
