If you told me I had to fish only one fly for trout for the rest of my life, I’d choose a soft-hackled bead head Pheasant Tail. An attention-grabbing copper bead, soft, flowing hen that whispers, “I’m alive,” muted brown earth tones — a fly that looks like nothing in particular and a lot of things in general. It works along the bottom as a nymph, and it works as a swung wet near the surface. Try it in sizes 8-12 for steelhead and 10-20 for trout. – Steve Culton
