Carp have been a fascination of mine for a couple of years now. They’re big and damned hard to catch. I finally landed my first one last summer and when the opportunity arose to chase them again I was all for it.
This time it was entirely different than anything else I have experienced. Carp were chasing down big black streamers like brown trout. It was just crazy. I had no idea that carp would do that. We saw lots of fish, hardly any other boats, and even got buzzed by a crop duster. This picture was taken with a 40mm lens out of the rower’s seat. If anyone had been casting we would have hooked the plane. Crazy.
The whole thing is crazy. Trying to get a bottom feeding fish that is all slimy and nasty and lives in gross places is crazy. Why would grown men spend a day in the hot sun trying to get this very spooky and most times picky fish to eat a fly?
You’ve got to do some crazy stuff now and then. Break up the routine. Live a little. Life is short and getting stuck in a rut can be a killer. You blink and the summer is over and you missed your shot for another year.
Whatever your idea of crazy is, get out and go chase it. Don’t miss your chance.
