Fishermen are a funny bunch. Our fly boxes (at least my fly boxes) are filled with flies that we have faith in, that we will fish with confidence and certainty above anything else. Sometimes that fly is the perfect match for a situation, and is exactly what you need to be fishing. Other times you fish a fly for no other reason that you like it, you’ve caught fish on it, and you have faith in it.
Having faith in a fly is one of those things that can make or break your day. You are much more likely to fish a fly you have a lot of faith in. Therefore you catch more fish with it and your belief in that fly grows and you keep using it more and more.
Such is the case with the fly in the picture above. I literally have a box filled with these simple bastards. I was introduced to the pattern by my friend Amanda, who tied up a sampling and sent them my way a couple years ago. It’s super simple, but looks great in the water and has always, always worked for me. This has become my go to lake fly, and is always the first thing I tie on. It hasn’t let me down yet, and my faith is strong in this fly.
Just make sure your faith in a fly is well founded. There’s nothing worse than believing in a fly that just doesn’t work.
What are some patterns you guys have faith in?
