Thirsty Thursday: Ken’s Gin and Tonic

in Thirsty Thursday

Last Friday was a day of many firsts. First time fishing the Henry’s Fork. First time fishing with Ken. First time in an Adipose skiff. First pork rind. The best first though? My first Gin and Tonic.

There were gasps of shock on the boat when the fact that I had never had a G&T was revealed. Fortunately, Ken had come prepared. Both with (what he claims to be) the best gin and the best tonic water on the planet.

The tonic water is from Fever Tree and is reportedly one of the cleanest and best tasting on the market. The gin – from Bend Distillery – is produced in small batches in Oregon and is is very highly regarded. Truth be told, I know nothing about gin. Or tonic water. But after this I want to learn more…

Here’s what you need:

Crater Lake Gin
Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water
Lime
Ice
Stainless Steel Tumbler from favorite brewery, fly shop, etc (not necessary, but so much better if you do)

Here’s what you do:

Put all ingredients in the cooler at the start of the float. Fish until everyone is pleasantly buzzed on IPAs and big rainbows. Pull an ice cold tumbler out and fill about 1/2 full with ice. Pour about that much tonic water in (maybe half a bottle?), and top off with gin. Cut a lime wedge and run that around the edge of the glass. Squeeze lime into the drink, and mix well. Consume and enjoy heartily. Repeat as needed.

Like I said, it was my first G&T. But I think I’ll be hard pressed to find a better one.
