Continued from yesterday, here is the second half of artist Christina Deubel’s interview. If you missed the first part, read it here.
Any advice for budding artists?
Oh gosh, the biggest thing I would tell them is to show up on time, with all of your supplies, ready to do whatever it is that you told people you would do. Being on the business side of things I cannot tell you how often I have ran into ill prepared artists who expect you to do the work for them.
Also, don’t be afraid to talk to people. Networking is an artists friend!
Walk us through your creative process for one of your fly paintings.
I think I kind of went into this earlier when talking about always keeping an eye out for things that I want to capture on my canvas. There is often a story behind the flies that I have painted, whether it be a reminder of a loved one, a glimpse in time to their favorite fishing trip or just the crazy random things that people tie as jokes. I love them all! I’ve had people approach very timidly thinking that there fly wasn’t “Pretty” enough. I’m not looking for pretty, I’m looking for passion.
Do you get a chance to do much fishing yourself?
I try to get out about once a week. I drag my son with me a lot of the time, and that darn kid always outfishes me, it never fails. He is just learning to fly fish this year, after a decade of drowning worms. We have a blast out there on the water!
You mentioned on your website your work with the Liberty Building in downtown Spokane. Could you tell us a little about that?
Sure, I came into the Liberty Building 2 years ago now. Since that time I have been working to make it a place for artists to showcase their works in the Inland Northwest. We have this beautiful historic building and we pack it with artwork and host events a few times a year. In our area it is difficult for artists to show their work in a venue that is not a winery. At the Liberty Building we strive to make our art events fun for the entire family. It becomes a full senses experience. We have art in the form of paintings, sculpture, food, music, hands on activities and demonstrations. We also try to include a non profit in our events so that we are giving back to the community in those shows as well.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
I’m always working to step outside of my comfort zone and share my gifts even if it terrifies me. I figure we cannot grow unless we break through our own boundaries. I plan to expand upon the work I do with non profits. I have a few things planned for this summer working with various groups and creating artwork with them and I am very excited about that. I always have shows in the works and people can find me on social media to find out more about those.
I’m also working to have my paintings displayed as public artworks in a few areas in the Northwest and plan to make that more of a focus moving forward.
Thank you again Christina for taking part! In case you missed it in the first part, you can visit her website here, and be sure to check out her Etsy store here.
