I will say this about tying flies for the saltwater. It is damn nice tying on a hook that is bigger than your little fingernail. And using colors other than brown. I’ll always have a thing for tying trout flies, but damn this is nice!
Lately I’ve been dabbling with chum fry patterns. Every year about this time millions of chum salmon fry migrate from the creeks and rivers into the Sound. The sea run cutthroat just go crazy for them. Following some guidance from the guys at work, and several large purchases of saltwater tying material I now have a pretty well stocked fly box for the Puget Sound. Two of the patterns I have the most faith in are these:
The top pattern is a take on the classic Chum Baby, and the bottom is kind of self explanatory. On a side note.. These flies were the first ones I had ever used Clear Cure Goo on. I will never go back to epoxy again…
Hopefully this week sometime I’ll get an opportunity to try these out. More to come…
