Channeling Einstein on Oregon’s Latest Coastal Management Plan

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. – Albert Einstein

If you’re a reader of many fly fishing blogs or visit many fly fishing forums these days no doubt you’ve heard the call to chime in on ODFW’s Coastal Management Plan.

Digging into this one a bit further we agree with the Native Fish Society on this – ODFW’s latest CMP is a prime example of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting (or hoping) for different results.

West Coast fisheries managers (certainly not just Oregon’s) have been fiddling for years while native fish stocks burn away, some years slowly and some more rapidly.

With regard to the Oregon CMP, the Native Fish Society guys have this to say...

Oregon’s coastal wild salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout need your help. These fish are an important part of the unique heritage of Oregon, but their future is at risk from a new ODFW Coastal Management Plan (CMP), which fails to adequately employ the best-available science to address habitat, harvest, and hatchery pressures facing these coastal salmonids.

Two independent science reviews of the plan arrived at the same conclusions: The CMP is a status quo hatchery and harvest management plan, not a conservation plan, and it is unlikely that this draft plan will ensure these salmonid populations are viable in the future.

Send a quick note to ODFW to drive a stake to support wild, native fish on the Oregon coast and join the call for a conservation plan that uses the best science to build active plans for the future.
