This is the first is a series of posts to come over the next few weeks where we’ll feature some of the downright amazing flies that were submitted in the First Annual Swing the Fly’s Winter Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon Fly Tying Contest. Here’s the winning fly’s recipe and to follow in Andy’s footsteps, you’ll need to tie this one in hand

Tag and Tip: Oval gold tinsel and purple floss
Tail: Red golden pheasant crest veiled with peacock sword and teal
Butt: Black ostrich herl
Body: Peacock blue floss
Ribbing: A single peacock herl in front of silver rope tinsel
Hackle: Purple hackle starting at the first rib
Throat: Dyed blue silver pheasant, teal
Underwing: Fine peacock herls
Wing: Dark blue turkey, light blue turkey, gold and blue macaw, green peahen tail, peacock, purple turkey; repeat sequence with a last slip of argus
Sides: Teal
Roof: Bronze mallard and peacock herl
Horns: Scarlet Macaw
Head: Peacock herl, peacock blue floss
Hook type: Large irons, i.e. Blue Heron Irons, AJ Irons…

Andy’s Fancy was tied in the hand and is inspired by my wife’s favorite bird: the peacock. It is a winter pattern tied for dryline techniques, and it accounted for my first dryline winter steelhead. I am sure it would work with sinktips, but there are other patters for dredging.
