Winter is upon us, and for most of us that means a solid few months of nymph rigs and indicator fishing. The waters are cold, the fish are deep, and you want to catch a few fish and head back to the warmth of the car before you freeze your toes off. Regardless of what your personal feelings are about them, Thingamabobbers and Sindicators remain on the best strike indicators on the market. Yes, it is bobber fishing. But there really isn’t anything else that gives that level of sensitivity.
One of the problems that I’ve always run into when fishing those is getting them to stick on at the right depth in the line. They always seem to be sliding up and down on a tapered leader. Not to mention the big ass crimp in the leader they leave when you put them on. However, there are workarounds.
On that note, friend Winston Cundiff over at All Water Guides in Austin directed me to a blog post a couple of weeks ago that I found pretty interesting. He was gracious enough to allow me to share it here. While his method might be unconventional to some (a swivel on a fly rig?!?), it looks pretty solid and I look forward to giving it a shot next time I find myself nymphing for trout.
