Hot off the press: Swing the Fly magazine is pleased to announce our First Annual Winter Steelhead and Spring Atlantic Salmon Fly Contest, sponsored by Heritage Angling Products.

Set up the vise and tie your favorite Original or Variation of a classic winter steelhead fly or spring Atlantic salmon fly. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality, tying ability, style and perceived fish catching effectiveness. Each entry must be submitted with an accompanying description of the fly, its origins and the name of the pattern. If you are tying a variation of a classic pattern, please be sure to give due credit to the pattern originator.

Get started now; all entries must be postmarked by 1 December 2013 and winners will be announced in the January 1 issue of Swing the Fly.

Prizes will be as follows supplied by Forest K. over at Heritage Angling Products:

  • 1st: $100 Heritage Angling Products gift card
  • 2nd: $75 Heritage Angling Products gift card
  • 3rd: $50 Heritage Angling Products gift card

Don’t forget the fine print. There is no limit on the number of entries from any given individual. You will not receive your fly back; all submitted patterns will be used to start the Great Flies of the World wing of the Swing the Fly Spey Museum. Family friendly fly names please (at least PG-13); we have a growing number of young, impressionable readers. Please utilize legal and traditionally accepted fly tying materials as you create your fly.

The top patterns will be photographed for a centerfold feature in the next issue of Swing the Fly.
