I’ve been helping a couple of new friends get a Bonefish excursion squared away for early next year (Christmas Island, dammit) and in celebration they suggested I stop by yesterday afternoon for a ‘little boat drink’.
They offered a glass of what they christened Bedo’s Boat Drink and I have to admit, after my second I could almost begin to feel the sand squishing between my toes and hear the gentle surf breaking on the beach.
While the temperatures here were straining to break 60 and admittedly this would probably be best consumed in a tropical locale, a couple of Bedo’s Boat Drinks helped take a bit of the sting out of what’s been an otherwise up and down (read occasionally downright shitty) week.
When I asked them about the name, they said they first saw the drink label used at a ‘minion’ party hosted by the company they used to work for; the logic of the ‘minion’ party was that after a couple of these drinks, you didn’t care if you were a minion working for the man and walking around saying ‘bedo’ (ala Despicable Me) all day.
We’ll leave a seat open at the Tiki Bar.
16-ounce can of pineapple juice concentrate
12-ounce can of tangerine juice concentrate
2-liter bottle of Sprite
750-ml bottle of lemon vodka
1 small jar maraschino cherries
4 oranges, sliced into rounds
2-liter bottle of ginger ale
Mix the pineapple juice and tangerine juice concentrates with the Sprite and Vodka; float the cherries and the orange slices on top. Freeze overnight in a large bowl or dish (they used a stainless food service line tray).
When it’s time to serve, scoop into glasses and top with a splash of ginger ale.
Enjoy.
