From the WSC this weekend:
Whether it’s the mechanics of wading deep over snot–slick boulders in icy cold rivers while focusing on launching long casts, or the fear of having your raft overturn and finding yourself sucked into a hole, steelheaders tend to have a healthy aversion to a the idea of being in the river.
And then there are the fisheries biologists and a growing cadre of enthusiasts who recognize that the real action is underwater.
The Wild Steelhead Coalition is hosting a River Snorkeling event Saturday, September 21st at 10AM on the Skykomish River.
Russ Ricketts, passionate snorkeler and the fins behind Icicle TV and River Snorkeling, has graciously volunteered to provide guidance and instruction for this event. The WSC anticipates integrating snorkeling into other steelhead monitoring activities–with future training sessions lead by biologists–to further your understanding of the underwater world and help contribute to their recovery.
This pilot event is limited to a small group, so if you’re interested in participating email us immediately and we’ll share the rest of the details and confirm your spot. Participants need to supply their own wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins (rentals are readily available at any dive shop).
