Spurred by a prolonged stretch of cloudy, dreary weather and a running conversation with a friend on the coast, I have found myself thinking about saltwater quite a bit this week. Warm weather, large open flats full of tailing fish, key lime pie and fried shrimp, bikinis… Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
Everyone gets the saltwater bug now and then. The best remedy is to jump on a plane, tell your boss you have an emergency, and spend a week working off the post winter jitters. Since the reality of the world is nothing like that, we have to soldier on. There is another outlet, however.
Saltwater drinks.
What exactly do I mean by saltwater drinks? Obviously not drinks made with saltwater… Anything that sounds like it would fit in with the coast, the beach, saltwater fishing, or just sitting there on the dock of the bay (as Otis Redding would say), I would classify as a good saltwater drink.
Margaritas, mojitos, tequila sunrises, pretty much anything with tequila or rum could qualify. Even lukewarm cheap beer tastes pretty damn good out in the salty air. Your choice really depends on how the fishing was that day. My personal favorite has to be a tie between a good margarita and Landshark.
Whatever your saltwater dreams are and wherever they take you, drink something tropical this week, close your eyes and imagine the sound of waves crashing on the beach…
