I’ve been sitting at my desk for almost an hour now, staring down the blank page, waiting for inspiration to strike
It’s not happening.
Damn.
I blame the Nyquil. Mark and SWMBO were still both a little sick when they came to visit a couple weeks ago, and I believe they passed the bug down to me. Thus, I have been sick pretty much for a week (hence my absence from the blog over the past couple days). Nyquil always helps in these circumstances, but damn it leaves me foggy the next day.
Half a pot of coffee and I’ve still got nothing. This leads me to wonder.. What does bring inspiration? What fuels the muse that gives such clarity and vision? This is one of those questions I’m sure every creative type asks themselves sooner or later.
Hemingway said, “Write drunk; edit sober”. Many writers over the years have embraced this philosophy to the fullest. Hell, I’ve even tried it a time or two. And you know, it actually doesn’t work too badly. However, it is important to choose your writing drink well.
When I am working on my book, I find I write well while sipping on a Salmonfly Honey Rye. PBR seems to work well for blog posts. If I’m writing on another project I’ve got cooking, a glass of wine fits the bill.
Despite all the options the absolute best writing drink I can think of is coffee. Plain, strong, black coffee. On my days off when I am at home work, I’ve always got a pot going. I’ve worked my way through many posts, stories, paragraphs, and chapters by leaning back in my chair, coffee mug in hand, thinking. Need more proof? I just poured the last cup of the pot and this post is done.
A question for all the creatives reading this: What is your creative drink?
