One Paper’s Vision of The Future (of Outdoor Journalism)

Its been awhile since this debuted, but I thought it was worth pointing to anyway. The New York Times recently published an incredible multimedia piece about a tragic avalanche in the Cascades that took the lives of several very experienced back country skiers. Its not fly fishing per se, but it offers a glimpse into what fly fishing coverage might be like if money was no object (or at least if there was money to throw around). The piece weaves together excellent prose, videos (including interviews with some of the skiers that were there and GoPro footage from helmet cams), beautiful photography, and some pretty neat animations.

If you haven’t seen this one yet, give it a look. And if you are a back country skier or snowboarder, be smart about conditions, make sure you carry a beacon, and (based on the experiences of these folks) a backpack airbag. We want you to experience all that snow when the trout are rising in it next summer.
