Today’s Snowpack Isn’t Just Next Year’s Fishy Water (or Dipping into Ski Photography)

I was able to escape town council meetings and research to dash up to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort yesterday for the opening of their new intermediate-terrain Casper lift. The JH crew was fantastic; let me tromp where I needed to in order to get the shots, and a pipe lead crew member gave me a snowmobile ride around the mountain; zipping along gulches is not a bad way to get to where one needs to be.

Somewhat ashamedly, this was my first venture into any sort of ski photography, and it’s most definitely something I’m going to pursue.

The Casper lift was officially christened with the breaking of a bottle of ‘blue’ champagne, and soon the lift was put well into service by several-odd hundred skiers who were eager to shred the terrain.

After heading back down the mountain, I shot some B-roll around the resort – waiting to do much of it once there is actually snow on the ground! – and headed up to Grand Teton National Park to see what was going on. I’ve been investigating a grizzly death and touched base there; nothing new.

There’s no better thinking time than time on the road, especially when the roads are quiet and it’s through arguably some of the most beautiful terrain in the country. Talk about a creative shot in the arm.

I came back to Pinedale, made a cup of tea and started uploading photos. I’ve got a very busy weekend of shooting locally for the paper; let it snow!
