Watching Sediment Flows on the Elwha

With a recent fall rain-induced flush on local waters, several of the local rags (Peninsula Daily and the Seattle Times) have recently run pieces on the Elwha sediment plume flowing into the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Reading through the comments regarding the potential effects of the sediment plume is fairly interesting, as it’s readily evident that many readers neither understand nor appreciate the issues at hand with regard to native fish restoration.

Washington’s approach to native fish management is quite an interesting one, and begs another discussion for yet another day.

It will be interesting to watch the sediment flows on the Elwha; here are a couple of links from the USGS that at least will allow a live updating glimpse at flows and turbidity (granted a weak approximation of sediment load, but an easy one to fetch…).
