From this morning’s Madison River Foundation newsletter:

Renowned western artist and friend of the Foundation, Larry Zabel, passed away this week. Larry had been recently diagnosed with leukemia.

Larry had a heart as big as Montana. He loved the Madison River, the Madison Valley, its people, heritage and wildlife. Larry’s generous support over the years raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Madison River Foundation. Because of his generosity, the Foundation Board of Directors named him a “Steward of the Madison,” and he will remain so in perpetuity.

Over the years Larry donated scores of his paintings not only to our Foundation, but also to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Madison Valley Ranchlands Group, the Madison Valley Medical Center, and other local and nation organizations.

A memorial service for Larry is being planned. But the best memorial to Larry is the many friends he leaves and the many worthy causes he supported over the years.

Damn.

He’ll be missed and our best to his friends and family missing him dearly today.
