Carli Goes Fishing

Some days you wake up and just don’t feel motivated.  At all.  This morning was one of those days.  So when I got a text from my buddy Tracy asking if he wanted to fish this morning I jumped at the chance.  His daughter Carli would be joining us.  I haven’t fished with a little kid in a long time.

Carli is 15 months old today.  She’s a really cute kid, and with Tracy as her dad I’m sure will grow up to be a good fisherman.  Since we were just heading over to the pond, and with Carli in tow, we opted to use gear rods.

Don’t freak out now.  Gear rods might be the devil itself on rivers and moving water, but for the East Gallatin Rec Center Pond, I think they fit just fine.  And they’re simple enough that even Carli was able to get in on the action a bit.  (or try to, she wasn’t quite sure what to make of the rod).

There is no dignity at all in fishing garlic scented, glitter coated marshmallows.  None whatsoever.

But seeing the smile on that little girl’s face and hearing her laugh and enjoy herself made it all worthwhile.  She just sat there playing with the can of marshmallows for like two hours, having a ball and enjoying the beautiful morning.

I don’t have kids myself, and still maintain that the best kid is like the best dog, i.e., someone else’s.  But fishing with Carli today brought back a time when I was about that age, back before fishing got to be such a serious and complex endeavor.

Good times.
