With the economy in the dumps, gas prices high, and pretty much everything becoming more and more expensive, it’s hard to find really good values these days. Sure, we’d love to buy that new Sage rod, or always keep a sixer of microbrew in the fridge. But, life intervenes. Rent, utility bills, car payments, food, gas, it all adds up astoundingly fast.
Take me for example. Working retail, I don’t make much to begin with. Living alone sucks away a good chunk of that. What’s left over is usually reserved for the essentials. But then a goodly portion of that is syphoned off for flies, tying materials, national park passes, etc. It happens.
One of the areas that has really been hit hard is my beer budget. True, I don’t drink much at all, but it’s good to have some in the fridge. As much as I would like to keep Moose Drool or Salmonfly in there, at $8-$9 bucks for a six pack it doesn’t always work out.
Enter the cheap beers. PBR, Coors Light, Millers… There are a lot to choose from. Out of all of them, I would probably have to say PBR has become a new favorite. You can buy a 12 pack for $11 and it lasts me almost a month. That’s a pretty damn good value. I’ve even got an empty can on my desk from last night..
Plus, for whatever reason, PBR is one of those beers that just tastes good out on the river. True, everything does taste better on the river, but PBR just kinda fits. I can’t really explain it, but it does.
There is just something to be said about cheap beer. It’s almost like comfort food. You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate it. And no matter how bad the economy gets or how tight your budget is, you can always find room for it.
So next time you are buying beer, lift a glass in praise of cheap.
