The Early Start

Coffee smells better in the wee hours of the early morning.  It smells especially good when the reason you’re up in the wee hours of the early morning is to go fishing.

When the forecast is calling for severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and you’ve only got two days off a week, the early morning is the logical time to hit the road.  There is something special about rising before the sun (which in this part of the world is pretty damn early) and being on the road as the eastern sky lightens and watching the sun peek over the mountains.

A lot of good memories have been made over the years in the wee hours on the way to the river.  Sometimes you get up that early to hit a particular hatch.  Or to beat everyone else to the good run.  Or to try out some new water you heard about in the next county over.  But sometimes you get up at 4 am and go fishing just because you can.

I don’t know where I’m going to end up today, but I think I’ll mosey on down to West Yellowstone and see what’s happening.  I’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes waiting for the coffee to kick in and trying to figure what else to say and just realized I’m burning daylight, as it were.

Wherever you might be and whatever you are doing today (I hope it be fishing), kick some ass.
