The Yellowstone Opener: Just How Warm Has It Been????

We’ve had a lot of email today asking when we’re going to post updates on Yellowstone waters for the opener this weekend.

There are several layers of answers to that question:

  1. Starting this week, specifically on Thursday, we’re in our new rotation for river updates and will update all of the major Yellowstone National Park waters every week on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  2. We’ll also be providing the ‘short and sweet’ summary of YNP waters every week in the Good Chi Newsletter released on Thursdays; sign up in the right side bar if you haven’t already.
  3. It has been really, really warm in the neighborhood the past few days, particularly considering the fact there were snow flakes in the air early last week.  It popped 90 today at the local airfield and the wind has been howling – Mother Nature is taking a blow torch to the snowpack with these conditions.
  4. A friend was at Hebgen today and saw the SS Fat Guy sailing in the sun.  Beware.
  5. Most if not all of the ‘major waters’ in the Park with be high and dirty – most likely even the Firehole which is the traditional most fishable water opening day.
  6. Jake and I (hopefully) have a meeting with arguably one of the most knowledgeable YNP fly fishermen of all time Thursday morning in West Yellowstone – we’ll pick his brain as well as take a hard look at some of the waters on our short list for the weekend – Grayling, Duck, Cougar, and a few others in the small and much less traveled category.
